Today in Washington, the National Space Council and President Donald Trump approved a $3.4 billion funding package for America’s Martian colonies, including Polaris. This comes as Trump reiterates his commitment to ensuring that the United States becomes the dominant Martian power. On Truth Social yesterday, President Trump posted “We will NOT let the CHINESE or RUSSIANS dominate us! WE WILL DRIVE THEM OUT OF MARS! Mars is OURS, and WE WILL NOT GIVE IT UP! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!” Trump will be meeting with Russian President Putin over Mars in Moscow in the coming days.
In a press conference, a spokesperson for the National Space Council said “we have plans to build further Martian infrastructure and improve our settlers’ quality of life.”
The Martian Funding Bill of 2026 was supported by the Republican party, with a mixed reception by Democrats, who argued that government spending should be targeted towards domestic programs rather than extraterrestrial exploration. Representative Richard Martinez (D-ID) said at a rally for his reelection campaign “Mars exploration only serves to benefit the rich and powerful! What we need is change on the ground, and that’s what I’ll focus on in my next term.” Regardless, Democrats, holding a minority in both the House and Senate, were unable to prevent the bill’s passage by the Republican majority.
