The Growing Movement for Polaris Statehood

Among Polaris colonists, what was once a small fringe movement has garnered the support of at least 15 colonists: the Statehood Movement. As of now, the Polaris colony is ruled by the National Space Council, an office of the President, and has no representation elsewhere in the government. As such, despite the small size of Polaris, a number of colonists have begun to push for the colony to be admitted to the union.

“We, just like any other Americans, deserve to be represented in Congress,” said Alexander Grey on Bluesky today, “just like our Founding Fathers, we will fight against the tyranny of taxation without representation.” But, the statehood supporters face an uphill battle, considering that other US territories have had longer running but unsuccessful statehood campaigns.

James Launders, a legal expert from the University of California, Sacramento, believes that the Polaris colonists have “very little chance of becoming a state, especially due to their small population of only 80.” Regardless, the Statehood Movement pushes on, as they organize a protest for next week on May 27, in an attempt to pressure President Trump as he meets with President Putin over Mars. Whether or not they succeed will be determined in time, but for now, the Statehood Movement seems to be continuing on throughout the colony.
