This afternoon in a press conference, the National Space Council (NSC) announced a partnership with SpaceX to construct infrastructure in the nation’s Martian colonies. This comes after yesterday’s approval of a $3.4 billion budget for further Martian projects by the NSC.
“We are excited to work with SpaceX to connect our Martian colonies and expand them further,” said Vice President JD Vance, the chairman of the NSC. They announced plans to bring the satellite internet offering of SpaceX, Starlink, to Mars to provide faster internet access than possible with radio communication. SpaceX is also considering building an AI datacenter on Mars, bringing SpaceXAI’s Grok large language model to the planet alongside the X social network.
Officials from American colonies across Mars have voiced their support for this new partnership, with Polaris officials offering to house the planned SpaceX datacenter. Some Martians have voiced their opposition to the partnership, such as Alexander Gray, writing on Bluesky “We cannot let large corporations take away our power. We will fight this and we will win.” However, most Martians, according to polling from The Sol, are supportive of SpaceX and are looking forward to faster access to X and the Martian internet. When polled, one Polaris colonist wrote, “I’m excited to see what SpaceX can do to improve our communication network.”
